Brown Mackie College, South Bend
The Brown Mackie College - South Bend Veterinary Technology program began in June 2007. The college provides a monthly course delivery system in a community setting and recognizes the changing face of student populations and those entering the work force. Newly located at 3454 Douglas Road in South Bend, most program classes are in the 2400 square feet, Veterinary Technology wing located on the first floor of the building. Through a cooperative effort with South Bend Animal Care and Control, dogs and cats reside on campus during the class week providing students experience in patient handling, care and case management and this environment closely resembles activities in small animal practices. Large animal experiences are off campus in two settings. South County Veterinary Services, located in Hanna (Thomas Troxel, DVM, Purdue 1981) is the site for the instruction of ruminant skills. The Borton Farm in South Bend is the site for equine skill instruction.
Provisional accreditation was granted by the AVMA CVTEA in September 2009 and extended until the 2014 site visit. As of July 2010 there have been 20 graduates receiving an AS in Veterinary Technology. All are eligible for the VTNE. There is an active SCNAVTA organization on campus.
